PSALMS OF THE SEASON - ADVENT & CHRISTMASTIDE, YEAR A
The Psalms in Worship, A 21st Century Descant

by Rev. Dr. Mary Susan Gast, Conference Minister

Below you will find links to the readings from the Psalms assigned to Advent and Christmastide in Year A. These links will allow you to view or download the Psalms in Microsoft Word format.

It is my hope to render each of the Psalms in language that is understandable to people today, useable in worship, and true to the intent of the psalmists. These re-phrasings are not so much paraphrase as harmony, with the fixed, known melody as a base. The book is copyrighted, but you have my permission to use any of the readings posted on this website in a service of worship, with the printed acknowledgement:

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

PSALM 122
I rejoiced when they said to me,
"Let us go to the house of the Most High!"
Our feet stood within your gates, O holy city,
The city built up for people to come together in unity.
To this city the tribes go up, the tribes of the Holy One,
As was decreed for the people,
To give thanks for the deeds and the intents of the Almighty.
For there the seats of justice were set up,
The thrones of those who would establish justice.
Pray that the peace that is promised by this city will prevail over the earth.
May all who love you flourish, O city of God’s justice and peace.
Peace be within your walls, and well-being in your citadels.
For the sake of my kin and my friends, I pray for your well-being .
For the sake of the presence of the Author of Life, our God, I seek your good.
