Reflections of our Conference Minister
Rev. Dr. Mary Susan Gast
PALLING AROUND WITH RADICAL MONOTHEISM
You and I worship the same God. As do Anne Lamott, Ann Coulter, the Ayatollah, and my neighbor Larry Grossman. I make this assertion because I wholeheartedly believe that there is only one Supreme Being, Who dreamed up the cosmos and loved us into existence.
Maybe you saw the clip of a pastor in Iowa who was offering serious prayer that the outcome of the presidential election would favor his candidate.... (continued)

WESTERN CHRISTIAN EDUCATORS' CONFERENCE
This is a conference for those who serve in educational ministries with children, youth and adults. Held at Zephyr Point Conference Center in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, the beautiful setting of the conference center inspires and invites spiritual renewal. Plan now to be nurtured through Bible study, worship, new resources, workshops, stimulating speakers and time to build new friendships. The theme for 2009 is: Learning as Liturgy, Liturgy as Learning:
What if learning itself were an act of worship, and worship were the context for our learning? Using scripture, story and song as our common medium, we invite you to join your Christian education colleagues as we reclaim the ancient understanding of liturgy as the work of an empowered people of God.

The UCC has placed a full-page ad in The New York Times to proclaim the truth about who we are as the United Church of Christ.
In March, UCC President John Thomas wrote, "I received a call from the Rev. Tom Stiers of Riverside Church in Manhattan, who said his congregation was sending a check for $6,000 for the purpose of supporting the purchase of a prominent, full-page ad." Others were invited to join in fundraising, and a generous outpouring of funds was received. Thomas continued, "The vision for the ad is to speak proactively to the breadth and diversity of our denomination, while also acknowledging the hurt that many in our country have experienced in recent weeks, including the members of Trinity UCC in Chicago."

NEW - ANOTHER AD! (4/9/08) - We'll be in Friday's USA Today! Thanks to extra-generous support for the UCC's Tell Our Story Fund, another full-page ad will appear, this time in the Friday, April 11 issue of USA Today. Our ad invites the nation to enter a sacred conversation on race and asks other communities of faith to join our preach-in scheduled for Trinity Sunday, May 18. |
IRS TO INVESTIGATE THE UCC
LETTER FROM OUR COUNCIL OF CONFERENCE MINISTERS
February 28, 2008
Dear Sisters and Brothers:
Greetings in the name of a God who creates and recreates; a Christ who challenges and comforts; and a Spirit who sustains and inspires!
By now, many of you have probably already heard that the Internal Revenue Service has made the decision to investigate The United Church of Christ’s tax exempt status. In its letter, the IRS stated that their concerns were due to “articles posted on websites” that stated “United States Presidential Candidate Senator Barack Obama addressed nearly 10,000 church members gathered at the United Church of Christ’s biennial General Synod at the Hartford Civic Center, on June 23rd, 2007” and that “40 Obama volunteers staffed campaign tables outside the center to promote his campaign.” The full text of the IRS letter as well as our denomination’s initial response can be found on our website (the exact link is http://www.ucc.org/news/obama-speech-in-2007-prompts-1.html).
This week, the Conference Ministers of the United Church of Christ are meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico. When this news came to us ... [continued ...] |

Communities of Compassion Confronting Genocide
DEAR SUDAN,

Tim Nonn, member of our Petaluma United Church of Christ, had a wake-up call in 2004 - something HAD to be done to stop the genocide in Darfur, Sudan.
From the website: "It began in Petaluma, California as 'Dear Sudan, Love Petaluma,' a local interfaith campaign to support humanitarian relief in the Darfur region of Sudan. The goal: raise enough money to feed 55,000 refugees for one day--equal to the population of Petaluma. Since each Sudanese refugee requires only 16 cents per day for food provided through a program supported by Church World Service, the goal was $8,800. continued...

A RESOURCE FOR CONGREGATIONS BY REV. GAST
REDEMPTION SONGS - PSALMS IN WORSHIP
Our Conference Minister, Rev. Mary Susan Gast, has written a resource, Redemption Songs, A 21st Century Descant on the Psalms. She writes, "Between Walter Brueggemann and Bob Marley I never stood a chance when it came to a passion for the Psalms. Throughout my life as a pastor, I’ve wanted a theologically reliable volume of the Psalms which I could use with ease in preparing liturgy. I’ve wanted a faithful wording which would not constrict the vocabulary to current vernacular or totally disregard the Psalms’ poetics. During my sabbatical in 2002, I began to tread the corridor between scholarship and art, arriving at a 'descant' on the Psalms, which is not so much a paraphrase as a harmony and counterpoint upon the established themes...."
These “Redemption Songs” are the Psalms selected for use in liturgical years A, B, and C of the Revised Common Lectionary. You are free to use them, noting credit to Mary Susan Gast, Redemption Songs, A 21st Century Descant on the Psalms, © 2002.

MANUAL ON THE MINISTRY, SUPPLEMENTS AND APPENDICIES
While the Northern California Nevada Conference follows the spirit, processes, and terminology of the United Church of Christ Manual on Ministry, there are certain distributions of responsibility and general procedures which are unique to the history and structure of this Conference and its Associations. Thus we have the “Manual on the Ministry, Supplements and Appendices” (MOMSA), which highlights the practices which differ from those described in the Manual on Ministry and includes those policies which go beyond what is covered in the Manual on Ministry. The latest revision of MOMSA has resulted in Supplements, divided into 3 sections, which are, as of September, 2004, posted here on our Conference website. Appendices to each of the sections will be posted as soon as possible.
OUR DOOR IS OPEN - WELCOME!
