I'm Your Child

I am still singing, "Guide My Feet", as we raise money for the 100K Run. Today, I’m thinking about the last line of this song, "Lord, I don’t want to run this race in vain." Here again, I recall hearing this song sung slowly, and, after singing this line, a loud, "Have Mercy!" would spontaneously emerge. It was as if the person imagined the fretful possibility of losing it all at the end of the struggle and then thought, "No way, Lord! I don’t want to run this race in vain."

Hold My Hand

The spiritual "Guide my Feet" stays in my mind as I think of the 2nd Annual 100K Run. The second verse goes, "Hold my hand, while I run this race." The prayer in this song is at once a plea to God and to the wider community, "Please, Hold my hand, while I run this race."read more...
Hooray! It's Time for the 2nd Annual 100K Run!

I was shocked to hear Rick Warren’s recent story. Last December, with 10% of his members out of work due to the recession, his congregation’s budget was about to fall $900,000 short … unless the members responded with additional giving. Now that’s no surprise given the current economy, and was quite honestly comforting to hear in view of our own stewardship challenges among Northern California Northern Nevada local congregations and the Conference.
But here’s the surprise. Within two weeks, from gifts averaging about $100, not only had Rick Warren’s members closed the $900,000 shortfall in response to his request for additional giving, they raised a whopping $2.4 million!read more...

Put Your Whole Self In
“A good person produces good from the good treasure of his or her heart … because the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart." Luke 6:45
The words we speak and the actions we take show what we truly believe. One key lesson we learned during the God is still speaking campaign is that is our speaking coupled with inspired action can change the world. It begins with God’s Presence in each of us, flowing among us – a gathered and beloved community of communities we affectionately call The United Church of Christ.
We invite you and your congregation to speak and act this year, putting your whole selves in. Maybe the hokey pokey is what it’s all about? Toward that end we recommend the following two to three-year Stewardship initiative for local congregations and call each person and congregation to “Put Your Whole Self In.” We believe that if our congregations and members do this, we will all grow together – spiritually and financially – locally, regionally, nationally, and globally.read more...
