Delegates to the NCNC Annual Meeting at Asilomar in 2003 confirmed an Earth Stewards position statement, calling on congregations to encourage and support initiatives to promote environmentally sustainable policies and practices. Following the meeting, NCNC members from throughout the conference joined together to form a Steering Committee, in order to provide resources and support for congregations seeking to begin or expand their environmental ministry.

In accord with the Asilomar statement, the Steering Committee initiates, coordinates and organizes activities to:

  • engage in and promote the study of our Biblical and historical heritage of caring about the environment;
  • increase awareness and change public consciousness about our interaction with the natural world and its consequences;
  • link ecological concerns with social justice concerns, in light of indigenous interests, eco-justice, and environmental racism;
  • create regular congregational and community venues for discussions and learning about environmental issues, solutions, and alternatives;
  • focus collective and individual action to transform our society's unsustainable practices and policies for the long-term benefit and survival of present and future generations of all life on Earth;
  • work vigorously as advocates and activists for the protection and restoration of our local and global environment.
