Hooray! It's Time for the 2nd Annual 100K Run!

I was shocked to hear Rick Warren’s recent story. Last December, with 10% of his members out of work due to the recession, his congregation’s budget was about to fall $900,000 short  … unless the members responded with additional giving. Now that’s no surprise given the current economy, and was quite honestly comforting to hear in view of our own stewardship challenges among Northern California Northern Nevada local congregations and the Conference. 

But here’s the surprise. Within two weeks, from gifts averaging about $100, not only had Rick Warren’s members closed the $900,000 shortfall in response to his request for additional giving, they raised a whopping $2.4 million!

This is what the 100K Run is all about. It is not a literal run. It’s a race to raise $100,000, and every gift of $100 is in effect "a runner’ in the NCNC 100K Race for ministry in Northern California and Northern Nevada — UCC style. In the NCNC 100K Run, the 80 year old can run as fast or faster than many teenagers, giving multiple gifts of $100. Will you pledge or place $100 or more in the race today? You have until June 15 to fulfill your pledge. Please pledge today.

Just last night … the first gift of the campaign came in from a 51 year old non-runner in the amount of $5,000 who not only wanted to put 50 "runners" or (50) $100 bills into the race, he wanted to challenge others to do the same by promising to give us the $5,000 if and only if we can get 9 more such donors. I told him to go ahead and write the check — that the people of the United Church of Christ in Northern California and Northern Nevada will certainly rise to the challenge. Are you willing to join those giving $5,000 to help us get this challenge grant? I would love to sit down with you to discuss such a gift. You can even get together as a congregation or with a group of friends to fund a single runner or multiple runners  … Meet this challenge or make your own challenge grant.

Meeting this challenge grant would by itself retire half the goal for the NCNC 100K Run. Won’t you join us today?
