Lenten Devotions in Hard Economic Times

TWENTY-EIGHTH DAY OF LENT
                 MARCH 20

 Psalm 126: 6

Cast out
Onto ice floes,
Adrift and unreachable
On the cold surface of events,
Banished, without a trace
Of the lifeline of return,
We grieve the disconnection
From the land of our longing,
From the love of our life,
From the labor and the laughter
That once
Filled
Our days.

We have strewn
Our memories
Over salty seas,
Where they cannot take root.

Give us rich soil
Where we can bury
The foulness of failure,
Where we can lay to rest
The torment of loss,
Where we can build memorials
Befitting the eternal span of
Compassion and justice,
Affection and commitment,
Where we can plant
The green seedlings
Of reconciliation to
Our past and
Our future.

Let those who go out weeping,
Bearing the seed for sowing,
Come home with songs of joy,
Carrying their sheaves of grain.
