Lenten Devotions in Hard Economic Times
ELEVENTH DAY OF LENT
MARCH 1
Isaiah 55: 1a
We thirst in a time of drought,
An age of shortages,
An era of loss of that which is most basic.
Weak and staggering,
Passions paled,
Our withered voices groan,
Where is the water of replenishment?
We have drunk from tainted wells,
Pools of compassion soured by greed,
Springs of generosity repressed by fear.
Bitter,
Brackish with false hopes,
These streams of malice cause us to gasp,
Where is the water of cleansing?
Come to the waters,
Everyone who thirsts.
Come to the waters,
Waters of justice,
Waters of delight,
Waters of life,
Whose Source lies deeper than self-interest,
Whose blessing cascades over all the earth.
